She’s been hailed as an outstanding new voice on the folk scene, and won best newcomer at last year’s BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards (despite having racked up four full-length albums since her 2006 debut, with this being album number five). It’s not too hard to hear why she’s getting some recognition, though, and ‘The Spyglass & The Herringbone’ is polished yet earthy and delivered with a rare assurance.
The style of Oates’ music is rooted in folk tradition, both in terms of the acoustic instrumentation of violin and guitar and the lyrical content. She has a keen appreciation of narrative, of character, singing scenes and takes of everyday people and their lives. She does this with a graceful, lilting voice that’s melodious and ultimately very listenable.
