Review: 'Six Organs of Admittance + Golden Meat'
'Brudenell Social Club, Leeds, 16th June 2015'

-  Genre: 'Rock'

Our Rating:
I’ve seen some fairly unusual performances, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a guy trigger fractal pixellations on a screen using a drum kit as a trigger. Said guy in this instance happened to be Golden Meat, the solo project of James Islip, one half of the mighty That Fucking Tank. On a technical level, the buzzing bass builds, disjointed loops, ominous rumblings and stuttering percussion, paired with the migraine-inducing visuals is interesting to say the least, and the set was intelligently structured, both visually and sonically. That said, by the end of the set I felt the concept had been taken to its natural conclusion and it was time for some beer.

It’s been interesting to see Ben Chasny’s theoretical exegesis of The Hexadic System which drove the most recent Six Organs of Admittance album unravel, distancing himself from Brian Eno’s ‘Oblique Strategies’ and aligning the concept with the random elements that drove some of the most exciting experimental works produced by William Burroughs and Brion Gysin.

Concept can be fascinating, but it’s in the execution that its strength is proven. With Six Organs bringing the ‘Hexadic Europe’ tour to Leeds, I was able to join a respectable and immensely enthusiastic crowd in witnessing Chasny lead his three-piece band through a set that gave The Hexadic System a good working over during the first half of the set, before dredging through the brightest corners of the back catalogue in the second.

Remarkably, the set felt extremely cohesive, a sense of linear progression holding things together. Live, the folkier leanings of Six Organs’ sound ae imbued with some solid muscle, and the power trio format serves them well. The set built towards an intense rendition of ‘Shelter from the Ash’, which followed on from their version of Coil’s ‘Fire of the Mind’ which has over time become established as a fixture.

They focus very much on the music more than the crowd, largely with their backs turned to the audience to keep their attention on the drums and one another. They keep things tight, bouncing off one another with precision.

Chasny concludes the show solo, marking another change if pace and feel, actually bringing things full circle, having begun alone on stage too. Sequencing counts for a lot, and it proved to be integral to the flow of this show. Of course, what also mattered was that the sound was superb and the band performed magnificently. You certainly can’t put that down to chance.
