Review: 'Gum Takes Tooth'
'Silent Cenotaph'

-  Album: 'Silent Cenotaph'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '10th July 2015'

Our Rating:
With live drums and electronic gadgetry whacked through an array of pedals and other devices conjuring all other sounds, the duo of Thomas Fuglesang and Jussi Brightmore create music that’s out there and then some. Meshing together spacey electro-doodles and full-on thrash metal walls of distortion, hurling headlong into no-wave noise and beyond, debut album ‘Silent Cenotaph’, originally released in 2011 and now available for the first time on vinyl, is utterly crazed.

The vocals are largely buried in a mess of frequencies and fuzz and the changes in tone, texture and tempo arrive at a bewildering pace. But this is smart stuff, and there are some insistent grooves to be found. Moreover, the throbbing bass and whirling vortex of chaos that explodes from every bar is driven by some impressive and intuitive drumming. The throbbing attack of ‘The Mantle Colonised’ sounds like Butthole Surfers remixed by Nine Inch Nails and it’s hard to conceive this racket could be produced by just two guys (and if I hadn’t seen them live, I might not believe it).

It’s experimental, for sure, and while there isn’t any actual guitar, it’s definitely more of a rock album than an electronic album. It’s also bloody good.
