Superheroes Dream is Canadian singer / trombonist Doug Tielli and British pianist Adam Hibberd, and this, their debut release, also features the clarinet talents of Sarah Laughton. The trio delicately skip a path through clover-filled meadows and orchards of dappled shade as the light classical meets quirky chamber-pop
The trombone work on the sadly reflective ‘Another Dance Begins’ avoids becoming too much of a slice of ‘Hovis’ nostalgia by virtue of the dolorous piano and Tielli’s quavering falsetto which evokes Scott Walker.
Jauntier pieces, like the suitably sunny ‘June’, are balanced by the more melancholy musings of ‘Raindrop’.

It’s certainly a beguiling work, and it’s equally certain that these guys were born completely out of time. They’re clearly accomplished composers and musicians, and the fact you simply don’t hear music like this in 2015 sets them apart. This is no mere exercise in ‘retro’ or ‘vintage’ revival, though, and any of the tracks here would sit nicely as part of a film soundtrack.
