Unique voices are rare. It’s what makes them unique. As someone who’s spent some time on the spoken word circuit and delivers the occasional spoken word performance myself, I not only appreciate this fact, but also know it’s a tough game.
Described as a ‘singer-poet-showgirl’, Brigitte Aphrodite is a unique voice. Taken from her new show, ‘My Beautiful Black Dog’, a musical written and starring Brigitte and scheduled for this year’s Latitude and Edinburgh Festival, ‘Creshendorious’ is a little bit ‘wheyyy’, a little bit ‘yurrrr’, but don’t confuse her cockney chirp for the new Lily Allen or Kate Nash: Brigitte is an altogether more literary – yet still keenly urban – narrator.
Combining a quirky, raw edge with a keen individuality and canny sense of songsmithery and scene-painting, ‘Creshenorious’ utilises subtle beats and sparse, plucked acoustic guitar to back Aprhodite’s strong half-sung, half-spoken lyrics.

It’s not rap or singing, nor is it spoken word or slam poetry; instead, it straddles the boundaries and finds Brigitte carving her own niche. For that alone, respect is due, and the fact this marks the emergence of a strong new voice makes it all the more so.
