Review: 'Officer'
'Myriads'

-  Album: 'Myriads'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '20th July 2015'

Our Rating:
DC Logan, the man who is Officer, has an interesting biography, and his early years on a rough council estate and Northern Ireland at the height of the troubles mean he’s witnessed enough life to fill several albums.

The lyrics on this, his debut album are strong and resonant, personal and thoughtful, revealing, at times, a lyrical poeticism that’s perhaps surprising, but certainly not to be sneered at. Elsewhere, his words are weighty and direct. ‘Act of Survival’ is exemplary, an accessible, surging anthem that depicts bleak scenes;

Musically, the songs on ‘Myriads’ are comparatively understated and extremely easy on the ear, and contrast considerably with the turbulence of the lyrical content. For example, the surging ‘Glass Ceiling’ is rushing and emotive… but it also has hints of Coldplay about it.

The acapella intro to ‘One Day’ is powerful in its intimacy, while in contrast single ‘The Waters’ has a tense post-punk urgency about it, and ‘Ambulance’ is imposing and expansive without being Muse. At times things do get a bit overwrought (as on ‘My Darling Defibrilator’, which has shades of The Twilight Sad at their most anthemic, but also U2, not to mention the lyrical clunker ‘stand or fall in this ring-a-ring o’ roses / but darling I don’t have a pocket full of posies’), but this shouldn’t detract from the fact it’s a considered and well-realised set of songs with tangible emotional depth.
