Our Rating:
It's not easy growing up and finding your way in life. On the basis of the four short tracks on her debut EP, I think it's fair to say that Philadelphia-born Sophie Coran still hasn't found what she's looking for.

She's a classically-trained pianist but clearly has a preference for the simplicity and directness of pop. Her arrangements are conventional and uncomplicated, there's a hint of orchestration but nothing that really detracts from the voice and piano.

On Tell Me, the opening track, she is a little girl lost, looking for guidance and reassurance from a guy with a freckled back yet knows in her heart this is not the way to contentment.

On Out Of Focus she is even more resigned: "Hoping is hopeless; Don't know what I want anymore"

When in doubt, travel. Sophie did this in Europe for nine months before settling in London and One-Way Ticket reflects on this as a positive experience despite the fact that "In the morning, I'm still left with myself".

A hint of a brighter future comes with the closing track, Better, a letter to herself in which her life journey is compared to navigating a stormy ocean. "I was lost like a captain at sea" she recalls. The past tense indicates that the worst is past and calmer waters await.

Just thirteen and a half minutes long, this EP does little more than introduce an artist who may have found her sea legs but is still hesitant about casting caution to the wind.
