Mellow is the first adjective that springs to mind when looking to describe Stuart McCallum’s ‘City’. Laid-back vocals drift through some hazy, jazzy breaks and a chilled vibe hangs over this city of dreams.
There are some magnificently delicate, evocative moments to be found on this meticulously-produced work.
But at times, it all feels a bit smugly muso, less concerned with expressing anything beyond McCallum’s capacity for noodling indulgence on tracks that for all of their layered textures and apparent intent, lack direction and traction.
