Our Rating:
The album is emblazoned with a large sticker that informs the potential listener that it features the artist’s forthcoming single. Selling an album on the strength of a single people haven’t heard doesn’t seem like much of a pitch to me. Said sticker also advises that the single’s B-side is on the album, too – which in turn seems something of a disincentive to buy the single. Or maybe I just don’t get canny marketing, which is why I’m a music reviewer instead. In fairness, the music isn’t bad.

The daughter of Deep Purple’s Roger Glover, Gillian’s style is, broadly speaking, acoustic-led, folk-based singer-songwriterly fare. ‘Still Life With Music’ finds her painting poetic scenes and vignettes with images that draw heavily on nature, and sees her drawing on a range of musical styles. There’s a distinctly Latin flavour to ‘Catalina’ and also single ‘Fitful Night’. The second half of the album is geared toward softer, slower songs, and isn’t as enticing, but it’s pleasant enough, and the lyrics feel raw and exposed in places.

Dad Roger lends a hand on final track, ‘Cairo’. Its stealthy, cold synths rise across delicate but insistent percussion, and marks something of a departure. With a hazy shimmer of eastern mystery, it leaves a haunting atmosphere hanging in the air after the disc has stopped.

It may not be the most consistent album, but it shows Glover to be a songwriter who’s willing to explore different avenues, and the songs which are the least ‘safe’ or conventional are by far the most successful.
