Review: 'Midday Veil'
'This Wilderness'

-  Album: 'This Wilderness' -  Label: 'Beyond Beyond Is Beyond'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '11th September 2015'

Our Rating:
Soft, dreamy electronica flavoured with myriad influences filtered and twisted over rolling rhythms provide the spacious and expansive backdrop to Emily Pothast’s supple, floating vocals. ‘Empire is No More’ is a gothic drama brimming with Eastern influences, while ‘The Water’ builds to a raging tempest. Hints of Jarboe’s post-swans solo work drift though on broad ripples of sound, at once tranquil and disquieting, with the heraldic ‘Circle’ standing as a slice of meticulously crafted electro-pop with a dark edge.

Duran Duran meets Kraftewerk on ‘I Am the War’, an introspective narrative slides over an energetic bass groove and shoegaze synth. The luscious orchestration that swoops in elevates it towards the stratosphere.

‘This Wilderness’ creates a vast sonic desert, in which mirages fleetingly appear: the expansive soundscapes are immersive and envelop the listener, but force the focus inward toward your own innermost thoughts. This isn’t merely music, it’s art.
