Elements sounds like some naturally-inspired beauty products or a Dulux paint range. It certainly doesn’t evoke bouncy alt rock in the vein of Paramore and YouMeAtSix. So, while the songs boast energetic, thumping basslines and lively guitars, there’s a strong pop element that defines the structure and delivery.
Lyrically, there’s no shortage of positive messages in with the angst, a fist-pumping call to ‘Wake up, wake up!’ forming the hackneyed hookline in ‘Plotting Treason or Saving the World’. Such pseudorevolutionary, rebellious platitudes all ring rather hollow and lack any real substance. Wake up and do what, exactly? Take selfies on your iPhone? Hang out at McDonalds? Seems the kids can’t get enough of this stuff, and if it really did shake them from a state of apathy and torpor, I might be able find a bit more enthusiasm for it myself.
