Review: 'WOMPS'
'Live a Little Less / Dreams on Demand'

-  Label: 'Damnably'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '18th September 2015'

Our Rating:
Another guitar and drums duo? Really? Haven’t we had enough already? Well, there’s certainly room for more when they sound like Glasgow’s WOMPS. That this single release, which serves as a taster for their upcoming album, was recorded by the legendary Steve Albini at his Electrical Audio studios is, arguably, recommendation enough. Matthew Banhart’s mastering does able justice to Albini’s up-front sound, with the drums up and giving that live feel, which enhances the songs’ immediacy.

The comparisons being made are just: with the poppy jangle of Teenage Fanclub and the driving squall and energy of Nirvana – or perhaps with a passing resemblance to ‘Seamonsters’ era Wedding Present – ‘Live a Little Less’ brings melody and noise condensed into a three-and-a-half minute nugget, while the reverb-heavy racket of ‘Dreams on Demand’ calls to mind fellow Glaswegians The Yawns, on speed and with the amps cranked up to the max. Exciting.
