Review: 'Kirkegaard, Jacob'
'Arc'

-  Album: 'Arc' -  Label: 'Holotype Editions'
-  Genre: 'Soundtrack' -  Release Date: '6th November 2015'-  Catalogue No: 'HOLO4'

Our Rating:
Jacob Kirkegaard – no relation to Søren (clearly, the surname is spelled differently) – offers two longform tracks on this edited version of a piece originally commissioned as a soundtrack to Carl Dreyer’s silent film ‘The Passion of Joan of Arc’. Yet the reference isn’t entirely flippant: ‘Arc’ is a work of depth and, in places, tension, which while perhaps not biblical in its inspiration or scope, nevertheless has the capacity to evoke both fear and trembling.

Smooth rolling wide-screen drones forged by an intertwining tonal latticework. Monastic voices echo beneath a rising swell of celestial sound. Built upon sounds in a continual state of transition, the tracks are shifting, intangible, ephemeral forms. At times soft, restful, at times harsher, tense and brooding, the atmosphere turns, moving from a whisper to a scream, a place of comfort to a place of fear.
