Review: 'Hunck'
'Never Had A Dream EP'

-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '29th January 2016'

Our Rating:
The easy-going melodic indie-pop of lead track ‘I’ll Wait’ is perhaps to misrepresent Hunck. That’s by no means a criticism: it’s a delightful slice of melodic psychedelic shoegaze that drifts by in a shimmering haze of reverb, straddling the chasm between The Byrds and Chapterhouse. But the remaining three tracks are demonstrative of a band with much more than sweet nostalgia and tuneful trippiness going on.

There’s an old-fashioned folk feel to ‘Up in the Sky’ – at least in the verses, which almost hint at the ancient hippiness of the likes of The Incredible String band – but break out the chorus, and we’re jolted straight into the 201st century – ‘You’re so fucking mean, I can’t get to you,’ they sing.

The title track goes for the laid-back anthemic vibe, with subtle hints of the orient, while ‘So Far So Deep’ alludes to the precise pop of The Smiths, but with a drift of hazy dreaminess that provides the perfect backdrop to the layered vocal harmonies.

Across the four tracks here, Hunck demonstrate a quite remarkable diversity, as well as a consistent quality.
