Review: 'Yr Angen'
'Dieithriaid'

-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '12th February 2016'

Our Rating:
There’s no ignoring the fact the guitars chime and soar, or that they’re chained to some propulsive drumming and a sturdy, insistent bass on ‘Yr Opsiwn Hawdd’, and the richly atmospheric and textured guitar detail on ‘O Le Ni Do Dod’ is impressive. The loping rhythms and understated guitars intertwine enticingly on ‘Dros Gefnor’, and there’s a musicality that pervades the EP’s six tracks that’s quite compelling. They demonstrate a deftness and a rare attention to the way the sounds interact with one another, with an ear for dynamics which manifest in some captivating crescendos.

It’s equally an inescapable fact that Yr Angen are staunchly and explicitly Welsh. To be clear, that’s no criticism, although there is a sense that the language does pose something of a barrier in terms of communicating message or sentiment with the non-Welsh-speaking world.

Nevertheless, don’t let it be a deterrent: it’s still worth engaging with the lush sound on this release.
