Review: 'CHIN OF BRITAIN'
'The Weasel Is At The Bridge'

-  Label: 'Waltz Time Recordings'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '4th March 2016'

Our Rating:
Chin Keeler plays guitar, drums and sings on this album and perhaps because of this he does so in an idiosyncratic fashion. It is a tumult of sound that has a pop element reminiscent of a band such as Supergrass but with a dirty Sonic Youth undertow and a smattering of ancient Chilli Peppers for good measure. Most of all it reminds me of an album by Sukpatch that probably no one else ever heard. The guiltiest of pleasures.

'Last Seen Alive' starts the album off in propulsive fashion and is followed by 'Feel It' which has a hippy pop Silver Machine vibe to it. 'Going Down' is definitely my favourite track on the album. The marriage between the Sun Dial style riff and the vocal harmony work just fine for me. It is a song that you want to sing along to. 'Don't Make A Sound' does not change the template already laid down but drags its heels a bit and 'Until The Sun Goes Down' takes some of the grind out to produce something lighter in tone.

'Physiology' almost goes Appalachian country with some electronic extras. 'DWMT' is a message to someone but it seems to tie itself up in knots in the process. 'Sit Back' takes things into more straight-ahead rock territory with mixed results and 'We Are Here Now' pares things back quite nicely. This might have been sequenced earlier in the album to provide some respite and the same could be said of last track 'It's Too Late' as this is the 'slow one'.

All in all this is a solid album but it does seem a tad 'front loaded' so it has a feel of diminishing returns. Also, I played this in my car and it sounded quite different. The bass guitar got all in my grill and this detracted somewhat from the vibe. I can't give a professional opinion on the mastering and production other than it sounds better on a crap stereo and the same can be said of a lot good albums.
