Review: 'Youngstrr Joey'
'Grilled Wiig'

-  Label: 'Song, By Toad Records'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '12th February 2016'

Our Rating:
According to the press release, Youngstrr Joey produces lo-fi insomniac rock, recorded in a Glasgow bedroom between 9pm and 5am. It sounds like he’s not slept in a month: shit don’t get much wonkier than this. It’s music made for cassette (which is precicely how it’s being released), or for limited edition tiny-label vinyl pressings, and has all the hallmarks of the lost classics of the late 80s and early 90s, the kind of eccentric stuff that’ so far from the mainstream that a fanatical cult following is destined to latch on to.

Squiffy no-fi oddball pop recorded quietly so as not to disturb the neighbours, it’s buzzy, echoey, off kilter and borderline off-key, and had an honest charm of the kind espoused by the early releases by Pavement and Silver Jews – so if you can get past the roughness and connect with the ideas and the zany pop lurking beneath the unrehearsed, one-take shambolic mess, you’ll be sure to find the slivers of diamond.
