Bouche – that’s the musical outlet of Rebekah Bouche, English singer and double bassist, accompanied by guitar and horn – offer an interesting blend of jazz, blues and folk on their Kickstarter-funded debut album. Interesting because they’re looking more to 18th and 19th century hymns and British folk with a literary twist, rather than the more obvious points of reference, such as contemporary or trad folk.
Lyrically, Bouche’s songs demonstrate a rare poeticism, which again harks back to history. It’s not every day in 2016 you’ll hear a song with lines like ‘What monstrous beast did you bring here? / And beasts be they that though you plead they do not hear / But, if to you these beats they be / then we are too, as such, you see’.

Rebekah’s bass style is subtle, understated, and her voice smooth, laid-back sounding. From the sparse atmospheres of ‘If I Were Queen’ via the stripped-back, murky blues of ‘Old Man London’ and the more uptempo, jazz-tinged ‘Je m’accuse Blues’, it all works remarkably well, and sounds natural, unforced.
