‘Unusual’ is perhaps the first word that comes to mind when listening to ‘Conga’, the new mini-album from Japanese girl/girl duo Sonotanotanpenz.
The music is stark, jarring. Primitive rhythms jolt against clanging electronics. Theirs is an unusual, and at times difficult, dissonant sound. Combining an almost child-like sing-song sense of melody with irregular motifs and clattering percussion, they evoke the same disquietude as early Pram.
Sweet harmonies and a simple acoustic guitar backing are all there is to the title track, and the delicate, lilting ‘a farm, and the universe’ sounds like an entirely different band from the one at the start of the album.
