Where Whitecliff’s debut, the ‘Young Lovers’ EP, showed promise, their latest single indicates fulfilment. With an insistent bass groove and some neat guitar detail, ‘Five Minutes’ goes all out on the big chorus. Oliver Nagy deceptively delivers the verses in an unremarkable indie lad tone, but as is seemingly his trademark, soars upwards by an octave in the choruses, transforming the song completely in the process.
The maudlin flipside, ‘Till the End’ is a magnificent outletting of sadness with heavy hints of Thom Yorke in Nagy’s vocal performance.
