Review: 'Shot of Hornets'
'Make Out a Picture(EP)'

-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '1st July 2016'

Our Rating:
In the very crowded field of noisy alternative rock bands (many of whom, like Shot of Hornets hail from Wales), it’s rare to find an act that really stands out. ‘Make Out a Picture,’ the debut EP from this trio suggests that Shot of Hornets is that rare thing. Throwing in elements of alternative rock and post-hardcore, colliding big noise with some neat melodies, the songs twist and turn in all directions, held together by a really meaty bass sound.

Powering between sinewy guitar lines and jolting riffs before careering into shouty, gnarly noise, they still manage to throw in some nice hooks and melodic choruses, without any of it sounding forced. The interlude track, ‘Firm Handshake’ is a graceful post-rock composition – which ends abruptly and slams straight into ‘Everything with Nothing’ It’s less a song and more a sequence of segments bolted together at strange angles, leaping from jolting riffage and screaming vocal to hefty prog passages via anthemic contemporary rock. It all adds up to a striking and confident – and most importantly, an exciting – set that points to Shot of Hornets being a band to keep an eye on.
