Review: 'Hostiles, The'
'Last Call'

-  Album: 'Last Call' -  Label: 'Bubble Tea Records'
-  Genre: 'Punk/New Wave' -  Release Date: '15th July 2016'

Our Rating:
If you like ska-punk, then there’s no shortage of bands out there bursting with energy and bold brass out there. Where to begin? I don’t know. I’ve never really dug it myself as a style, and am largely of the opinion that once you’ve heard one ska-punk album, you’ve more or less heard them all. Here, have a Reel Big Fish album. It’s got some entertaining covers on at least.

With ‘Last Call’, Hostiles disprove my theory of uniformity, and pack a lot more beef than most. Turning up the guitar action, they drive home a set of songs with a fair range. The heavy trudging riff of ‘You Liar!’ and heads-down thrash chug of ‘Send My Life’ contrasts with the jaunty of indie sound of ‘So I Wonder…’. Elsewhere, ‘Night Out’ is quirky, and infuses some ballsy guitars with a Latin flavour. As goes with the territory, there are strong melodies, harmony-led hooks and lots of trombones.
