Back in the dark days of the 1970s, there was this thing known as hard rock. And there was heavy metal. In fact, given that a fair number of hard rock bands are also considered the progenitors of heavy metal, there was a degree of interchangeability between the terms. Times have changed, and so has music. Well, some of it. Red Spektor are pitched as a stoner rock band. Precisely what does that mean these days? Combining elements of heavy metal, psychedelic rock, blues rock, acid rock, and doom metal and favouring a retro production, ‘Red Spektor’ fits the accepted definition of stoner rock. Which essentially means that with hefty hints at Zeppelin and Sabbath, ‘Red Spektor’ is a classic, old-school heavy rock album.

They’re a proper power trio, cranking out blues-based boogies and thunderous psych with deep grooves. The lumbering, bass-led ‘Elixir’ veers off on a wild, extended guitar solo and there are chunky, chugging riffs galore across the album’s ten tracks. That’s a whole lotta fuzzed-out, overloading bass action and wah-wah lead breaks. Cracking stuff.
