Review: 'CAMERA'
'Phantom Of Liberty'

-  Label: 'Bureau B'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '5th August 2016'

Our Rating:
Camera have a tight and driving sound and have justly been compared to Neu!

Michael Drummer is the pummeller and Steffen Kahles plays synth etc. This is their third album and it's pretty cool. 'Affenfaust' sets the tone nicely, hitting hard and grooving solid for 8 minutes, minus the break down at 5 that lasts for 3! It would be great to see this live and they play Shacklewell Arms in London in September if you are interested.

'Frohlichkeit' is another extended track, slightly slower and more keyboard dependent. Lower tones repetitive and higher registers providing melodic counterpoint. 'Festus' changes the mood somewhat, with references to sitar and tabla but thankfully pulls it off with the assistance of metallic effects and nice 'almost feedback'. A track to go back to at a later date for sure. 'Nevernine' starts out life as a distorted four track demo and pretty much stays there whilst becoming increasingly manic until it empties itself out.

'Ildefons' is a short and sweet funky drummer number with distorted heavy keys, sounding like guitar? 'Reindenken/Raus' starts with footsteps and cars driving past and then gentle drum fills come in with a nice bassline. It's like...well, chill. Maybe there is a guitarist on this album? Playing underwater wah-wah like Hendrix on this track alongside accordion keyboard and squeaky things. 'Tjamahal' takes the prize for best song title on the album and we are back to the motorik with this one. Death In Vegas made a not too shabby career out of it so you can see the appeal. Why does anyone like repetitive, hypnotic music? Rhetorical questions aside this is a damn fine track and you could always sample this first to see if you might like the album. You might be able to do that on the Bureau B site?

'Tribal Mango' takes it steady and cerebral for the intro and then a well ramshackle jam starts up with vocal samples from space to NASA playing underneath. A pretty good album all-in-all. Shabby but not too shabby. Chic but not too chic.
