Review: 'GILMORE, THEA'
'Avalanche'

-  Album: 'Avalanche' -  Label: 'Vital'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '8th November 2003'

Our Rating:
Born in rural Oxfordshire, and still only 24, her song-writing talents are starting to be recognised. "Avalanche" is Thea's fourth 'Proper' studio album to date. All the influences are there to be heard; Dylan, Costello & Mitchell; yet Thea brings something new into the previously stagnant female singer/songwriter category.

"Headstrong. Heavy weather going at it hell for leather" sings Thea on the track 'Mainstream'.

Although her album entered the albums chart at a respectable number 35, her lyrics and wit are a far cry from the crop of lifeless Brit songwriters at present.

"Are you gonna swim the mainstream?" Thea questions in one of the more up-beat tracks half way into the album. As always Nigel Stonier is on hand to provide those backing vocals, and slick production, as ever.

Singles "Rags and Bones" and "Juliet" are strong, but not the highlights of the album. Terry Wogan of all people has had a great deal of influence on Thea's publicity to date. Making both singles and her album 'Records of the Week', Thea's music reached wider audiences.

On "Pirate Moon" there's more than a nod to Annie Lennox, followed by an electro-mumble alike to a cross between Tori Amos and Blue Monday. It's this variation that is Thea's true strength. Her voice is an apt tool for a 3 minute rock track, or a swooning love song, or a bitter resentful growl.

But it has to be seen, attendance at one of Thea Gilmore's forthcoming tour is compulsory. Not only is her voice more impressive, but you can be assured she'll squeeze in a couple of covers too. A personal favourite is "Ever Fallen In Love", which takes the Buzzcocks, slows them down, and creates a somewhat beautiful haunting song.
