Review: 'KITT, DAVID'
'Square 1'

-  Album: 'Square 1' -  Label: 'Blanco Y Negro'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: 'January 19th, 2004'

Our Rating:
“Square 1” is the third album from Irish songsmith David Kitt. Kitt received acclaim for his debut mini album “Small Moments”, followed up by “The Big Romance” released in 2001.

The album opens with “I’m in love with a girl”, the words of Alex Chilton which then lead nicely into “Me & My Love”, an adaptation of Gamble & Huff’s soul classic “(You) Got what I need”. Eventually electronica seeps into the album on “Tonic”, Kitt’s duelling lines and lyrics are swept along with various breezy samples.

Simple pop songs follow, “Long Long Stare”, “Your Smiling Face” and “House With Trains” are unlikely to make a dent in the Top 40, but are written with such grace that could encourage Spring to come early.

“Faster & Faster” an album highlight, manages to mix pedal steel with accordion and a smooth and silky sax from New Orleans legend Dickie Glass. Recorded on honeymoon with Kitt’s new found love, “My heart’s beating faster and faster” is representative of a loving, honest and gentle album.

“Me & My Love (Reprise)” is revisited, and the album draws to a close, but not before “Sweet Summer Morning”. Again lush production prevails, and Kitt’s minimalist approach results in pop songs with great depth. David Kitt’s third release, “…on a sweet summer morning, that’s what I’ll need”.

If you liked this, try these:

David Kitt – “Small Moments”
Damien Rice – “O”
Elliott Smith – “Either/Or”
