Review: 'Decipher'
'Blame Yourself (EP)'

-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '30th September 2016'

Our Rating:
Decipher describe themselves as ‘alt-hardcore’. Isn’t hardcore alternative by definition? It’s hardly mainstream. Or are they suggesting they’re an alternative to hardcore or post-hardcore? I sincerely hope not, because they definitely aren’t. They’re not especially good, either.

Musically, they’re ok, if largely unremarkable. The guitars are a bit thin and low in the mix to really pack much punch, but there are some nice details and almost post-rock mini-breaks in places. There are also some neat tempo changes and dynamic shifts which work well.

But Calum Stone’s vocals are an issue. When he’s not doing the shrill, shriek shouting thing in a key all of his own, he’s whining in a mangled American/Cockney crossover. It’s a style that doesn’t work well.
