Review: 'Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog'
'IV'

-  Album: 'IV' -  Label: 'Sbrigyn Ymborth'
-  Genre: 'Folk'

Our Rating:
Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog – brother Iwan, Dafydd and Aled Hughes, along with lontstanding collaborators Llyr Pari, Branmwen Williams and Euron Jones – expand on their favoured influences of folk, rock and country (in particular Leonard Cohen and Neil Young’ for their fourth album. I’m unable to comment on the lyrical content, but the melodies are lilting and the harmonies gentle and beautifully spun together.

The acoustic-led songs benefit from full-band arrangements which at times lean into classic rock territory. There are some nice details on tracks like ‘Mor ddrwg â hynny’ and the disco-tinged ‘Dwi’n ‘nabod y ffordd at harbwr’, from trilling Hammond organ to backwards guitar. Elsewhere, ‘Y lôn sy’n dân o’n blaenau’ and ‘Blodau ar dân yn Sbaen’ follow more classic country conventions, with slide guitar to the fore and the vocals delivered in a baritone croon.
