Review: 'Hang Massive'
'Distant Light'

-  Album: 'Distant Light'
-  Genre: 'Reggae' -  Release Date: '25th November 2016'

Our Rating:
‘Distant Light’ is the third album from Anglo/Swedish collective Hang Massive, so named on account of their love of and reliance upon The Hang for their sound. Apparently, it’s not a hang drum, and some people get quite stroppy about it being referred to as such. Pah.

The nine tracks are something of a global musical journey, drawing myriad styles and influences. ‘Awoken’ draws on elements of what might broadly be deemed ‘world’ music, along with aspects of reggae and hip-hop, in a chilled-out package. In fact, the overall vibe of the album is extremely laid back: the smooth, soulful ‘Upon the Star’ is sedate and minimalist, with a phat strolling bass wandering through.

Mellifluous string detail and rolling synths paired with a wide range of rhythms define the sound, and there’s a strong focus on the creation of smoky, hypnotic atmosphere. It’s a shade new-age hippy for for my tastes, but it’s not hard to see the appeal, or to appreciate the musicianship.
