Our Rating:
You certainly can't get Karen Jonas under the trades description act.

Here, as it says on the can, are a set of ten country songs.

Jonas is a singer from Fredericksburg, Virginia who wasn't raised on the genre but has embraced it all the same.

As she points out in the title song, you need to have your heart "good and broken" to understand why country music packs an emotional punch. In the same song she also marvels at the tightness of Dwight Yoakam's jeans.

Though she began song writing after being inspired by Joni Mitchell's Miles Of Aisles, she ends up twanging like a natural thanks in no small part to being backed by Tim Bray on lead guitar and Jay Stirling on lapsteel. Both these musicians give the tunes an authentic edge and Jonas has the voice to carry the rest off with aplomb.

Upbeat songs are strong but it's the slower numbers like The Garden and Wasting Time that work best, a little in the mould of Cowboy Junkies.

Jonas plays in a classic style albeit with a healthy Rock'N'Roll attitude. Above all, she steers well clear of the polished and saccharine Nashville sound.

In short, there's enough Alt. to her brand of country and a modern swagger so that there's plenty to enjoy even if you haven't had your heart broken lately.
