Our Rating:
Kristin Hersh is one of those artists who really does require no introduction. With an enviable body of work, both with Throwing Muses and 50 Foot Wave as well as as a solo artist, with nine previous solo albums to her credit, Hersh has nothing left to prove. She could be forgiven for coasting a bit. But there’s no evidence of her taking it easy on ‘Wyatt at the Coyote Palace’.

‘Shotgun’ makes for a bold opener: it’s a full six minutes in length for a start, and combines tormented but cutesy vocals with a rolling piano, and, an underlying cacophony of discord, which makes for an evocative and turbulent listen. It’s the wandering bassline that makes it, of course.

Hersh knows exactly what she’s doing, but nevertheless, it takes guts to put out a 25-song double album, and the fact said double album has the capacity to hold the attention is a major achievement by any standards. It’s Hersh’s refusal to sell out or to play the game – she’s been there, done that, and rejected it in the interests of preserving her artistic integrity – which means she can release albums like this, but what ‘Wyatt at the Coyote Palace’ renders apparent is that Hersh is one of those artists whose creative powers are showing no signs of diminishment.

If ‘Wyatt at the Coyote Palace’ sits as an acoustic album at heart, it’s an acoustic album with some thumping, crashing, drums, extraneous incidental noise, and more edge than a new razor blade. It’s not always easy listening, but it’s a great album and an artistic triumph.
