Our Rating:
I vaguely recall a conversation with someone the other week which touched on Peaness. I’m talking about the band, of course. I’m pretty sure they said that the band were prone to getting irate over any review which commented on the single-entendre connotations of their name. Despite the fact this is only half-remembered, and I haven’t found – or been bothered to find – anything which validates this claim, I’m still not going to make a deal of the puntastic connotations of an all-girl indie trio called Peaness. Because, frankly, what the point? It sort of speaks for itself, and we should all probably let it lie, right, and focus on the music?

This five-tracker is sharp as new razor blade. ‘Oh, George’ is a slice of quintessential late 80s / early 90s indie, as the title implies with its Morriseyesque Englishness and wilful drabness of the character’s name. There are some nice minor chords sequences which imbue the song with a perfect bittersweetness.

Elsewhere, it’s the bouncy bass and nagging guitars, paired with some breezy harmonies which bring a levity to the conflicting sentiments and resignation of ‘Same Place,’ and even when they’re getting irate about social issues like food waste (‘Ugly Veg’, they do so in a tuneful and appealing, accessible fashion.

As a whole, ‘Are You Sure?’ is a superb pop record. And yes, I am sure.
