Review: 'Parallax Method, The'
'The Squid (EP)'

-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '12th May 2017'

Our Rating:
Some people learn nothing. Despite the panning I gave the fretwanking frenzy that was ‘The Owl’ EP, self-proclaimed ‘modern instrumental progsters’ The Parallax Method are back with its counterpart EP ‘The Squid’.

It continues where its predecessor left off in every sense. The tracks are even numbered 6-10 and again, lame puns and in-joke wordplay provide the basis for titles like ‘You Gotta Be Squiddin’ Me!’ ‘Owl Pacino vs Mega Mango’ and ‘I Squid You Farewell (Owl Be Seeing You)’. The accompanying press shot’s no better, either.

Fleeting moments of quite neatly-forged riffery are buried in what feel like endless hours of jazz-rock noddling. There’s a lot of bluster but no sense of direction, either within the framework of each of the (quite lengthy) compositions, or across the EP as a whole. And what exactly is the concept? I have no idea, and I can’t say I’m too fussed about finding out.
