Review: 'GNOOMES'
'Tschak!'

-  Label: 'Rocket Recordings'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '10th March 2017'

Our Rating:
“Growing up in Russia affects our music a lot”. This statement is not so surprising considering the music made by this trio from Perm sounds distinctly druggy and subversive enough to put the brain police on a state of high alert.

The band's second album is described as "blissfully kosmische and aggressively abrasive" and draws heavily on spaced-out Krautrock or psychedelic experimentation.

Think of it as a psychic defense against repressive forces.

The band were fortunate in that they gained some space to express themselves through being able to work in splendid isolation thanks to a studio space provided by a local radio station.

They were also able to make use of a collection of Russian synths manufactured during the Cold War by Soviet physicists and sound engineers who wanted to create new instruments that could compete with the American analogues.

The vocals are either buried in the mix or else full of faux-naive lyrics like "It is such a lovely day to catch the wind and laugh like I am a child again" (City Monk).

The mood swings between hazy guitar pop and hardcore rock so at times it feels like the threesome are pulling in different directions.

Ultimately, however, there's enough co-ordination to help produce plenty of sonically inspired and invigorating sounds.
