Review: 'Puppet Kings'
'Very Cool & Groovy (EP)'

-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '1st September 2017'

Our Rating:
They were always taking a massive risk with a title like ‘Very Cool & Groovy’. Even if it’s true, it’s a pretty cornball title. ‘Wanderlust’ (a title cranked out by the indefatigable rock ‘n’ roll cliché title generator) is driven by a thrusting, groove-led riff and thumping rhythm section and oh, it’s pure Queens of the Stone Age. But the initial excitement is undermined by the vocals which are dangerously close to Foreigner at times, and it highlights just how fine the line between self-aware awesomeness and derivative rock bollocks is.

As the EP progresses, the riffs keep on churning but the sameness comes increasingly to the fore. The emphasis on the harmonised melodies, pitched high in the mix against the guitars, reveals a band leaning more toward commercialism and the accessibility of a more diluted form of rock which is neither cool nor groovy.
