Since their second album this band from Saskatchewan have lost a bassist but gained a synth.
Otherwise it seems business as usual with Will Quiring singing melodic neo-soul songs of quiet desperation in a quest for connection and substance. Seasonal Friends, for instance, is about those fair weather folks who are never there when you really need them.
"I can't take much more of this" Quiring opines on Waking Up more with a sense of fatalism than despair.
And therein lies the problem for the album as a whole. There are nice enough tunes but the spacious arrangements can't mask the fact that the songs themselves are lacking in passion or venom.
