Review: 'Eagle Twin'
'The Thundering Heard (Songs of Hoof and Horn)'

-  Label: 'Southern Lord'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '30th March 2018'

Our Rating:
‘The Thundering Heard (Songs of Hoof and Horn)’ is described as the point ‘where doom and blues collide’. Gentry Densley’s dominating low-end vocal tone and Tyler Smith’s powerful rhythmic propulsion come pitched as ‘a compelling combination, particularly when you add melodious bluesy romp to the equation’. You can’t beat a good romp, and the four extended workouts on ‘The Thundering Heard’ romp alright.

‘Quanah Un Rama’ comes piledriving in with thick, thunderous guitars and gnarled-up vocals and sounds like Melvins covering 70s ZZ Top. And it pounds and crashes on for 11 and a half minutes. The only real issue is that it simply isn’t long enough. At the other end, following a tour of all the riffs and all the solos under the sun, ‘Antlers of Lightning’ drags the album to an agonising, crawling ultra-low BPM, ultra down-tuned climax, a monstrous quarter of an hour of murky, low-down, dirty power chords.

The guitars crackle and buzz in a speaker-overloading tumult, while the low, throaty vocals depict scenes of nature through a filter of ancient lore, demons and blood. Or something. What makes it all work is the sonic intensity and the sheer volume conveyed by the recordings.

And there are really only two guys here? ‘The Thundering Heard’ is appropriately titled: it’s a big racket, with a lot of bottom end and some hefty percussion that, when its up the pace, gallops along with a force that bellows that the weak should take cover or be crushed by an unstoppable force, and when the pace is slow, pounds everything into the ground.
