Review: 'Gutlocker'
'Cry Havoc! (EP)'

-  Genre: 'Thrash Metal' -  Release Date: '20th April 2018'

Our Rating:
The Woking four-piece are billed as ‘sinister sludge merchants’ and ‘groove metallers’. I’m less concerned with the nuances of genre: the band’s name and messy logo says almost as much as a 500-word review.

It’s some seriously heavy shit these buggers are pedalling here. The guitars are dirty, driving, overdriven and low-slung. The vocals are a mid-pitch screeching roar. The contrast means that the vocals give the illusion of pace while the low-end guitar churn grinds away at a slower tempo.

The whole thing is a cataclysm condensed to just four tracks with a combined duration of around 17 minutes. And it’s bloody brutal. There’s nothing subtle about this: Gutlocker explode from the very first bar with a gritty, dense and thunderous attack. It’s savage and relentless, it’s harsh and it’s harrowing. These are good things. And as it happens, there are no obvious bad things against them. It’s just not for those of a weak disposition, because Gutlocker bring the sound of distilled fury and amplify it to the power of 10.
