Review: 'UNHAPPYBIRTHDAY'
'Schaum'

-  Album: 'Tapete'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '21st September 2018'

Our Rating:
The new album from Unhappybirthday sees them moving on from tape recorder lo-fi and working with Berlin producer Jonas Meyer in an attempt to give them a sheen of sophisticated pop.

Their use of drum machine roots this in the 80s and opener "Carlyle" links them closely to OMD. The difference being in the styles of the respective frontmen and their vocals. Whereas Andy McCluskey played to the audience and concentrated on hooks, the vocalist of this band (Daniel Jahn) employs a soft baritone and probably sits on the drum riser smoking a cigarillo and sipping an expensive cocktail.

This does make for a more muted affair and when tackling an instrumental such as "Teer" they never quite sound as interesting as OMD managed to either. "Kane" has echoes of Slowdive and shoegaze as does closer "Sou" and "Miriam" is a strongly melodic highpoint. Predominantly I would describe this album as glacial Europop, somewhat dreamy and downcast and likely to appeal to listeners of that ilk.
