Our Rating:
BEAST (CAPS LOCK seems to be the deal here) is a new project by Brooklyn, NYC composer Koen Holtkamp, known by some for his work with the electronic duo Mountains (alongside Brendon Anderegg) but unknown by many more.

Experiments with light and color led to a shift in Holtkamp's approach to music making which resulted in him focusing on studio bound virtual pieces. These centre on simple rhythmic layered patterns to create "elaborately intertwining castles of sound".

Ens (which means entity or existence) deploys quieter and more personal working methods. The birth of his first child played a significant part in this process since this meant the album was recorded and mixed during hours snatched late at night and at odd times of the day.

Both the minimalist music and the accompanying video to Paprika Shorts give a clear introduction to a process. In essence, he makes a virtue of working around a limited sonic palette to produce seven precisely constructed pieces that are, by turns, restful, hypnotic and playful.
