Review: 'Finucane, Matt'
'Disquiet EP'

-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '14th December 2018'

Our Rating:
Multi-instrument-playing solo performer Matt Finucane has been chipping away for a full decade now. Having only slipped a few singles out recently, this is his most substantial offering since his second album, 2012’s ‘Glow in the Dark’.

According to the press release, the ‘Disquiet EP’ pulls together his influences of ‘art rock, Krautrock and horrible electronic noise’. Someone’s lying but it’s not necessarily cause for disappointment. ‘Ulterior Motives’ sounds like The Fall circa 1990 – specifically ‘Edinburgh Man’ – as he delivers a message about climate change in a lackadaisical croon.

‘Happy Chains’ throws together some ramshakle guitar work, wonky vocal melodies and extraneous noise to conjure something quite disorientating, both sonically an psychologically, and I’m reminded of the first Toiling Midgets album. Because the best shit is the most obscure, scribbly shit recorded on no budget, and this isn’t just about the songs or the style of playing but the attitude, which is DIY to the max.

And as chart music and the mainstream becomes increasingly clogged with ever slicker sonic wallpaper, the need for something raw and real becomes increasingly desperate. Because one should never conflate rough or lo-fi with a lack of artistic quality: the power and immediacy of a three-chord riff played with heart over the slickness of a track penned by 15 execs and pro writers and then produced to a point beyond perfection becomes increasingly apparent.

With the ‘Disquiet EP’, Finucane has delivered a low-budget mixed bag, and that’s actually a good thing. It’s real. It’s sincere. It’s honest. And he’s landed some decent tunes. And good on him.
