New electronic duo Magnetic Skies are pitched as sounding ‘like Japan and Tears For Fears meets Chvrches and Empire Of The Sun,’ and we learn that of the four tracks on the EP, ‘Dreams And Memories’ was the first song the duo wrote together – exploring nostalgia and nodding musically to Disintegration-era Cure ‘Magnetic Skies’ is the band’s newest track - a song about seizing life’s chances weaved around an inviting repeated sequencer line’.
The title track does indeed combine those chiming guitars and cool, cinematic synths as a backdrop to wistful lyrics about lost innocence, distance, and holding dreams close to your heart, delivered in a delicate, emotion-laden croon. It’s proper heartstring-tugging, lump-in-the-throat stuff.
The more buoyant and overtly dreamy tracks are… ok. Pleasant, accessible, with some nice layered harmonies, even a bit A-Ha, but arguably more generic and consequently less compelling.
