Review: 'Hezen'
'Bring Your Alibi'

-  Genre: 'Trip-Hop'

Our Rating:
Having showcased a dreamy, dubby trip-hop sound on her 2017 debut album ‘Stigmata’, Hezen keeps things dark on her first new material in 2 years.

Her biography notes that she takes influence from artists like Björk, Massive Attack, Sia, James Blake, and Lana Del Rey, and states that she draws on ‘themes of femininity, strength, and vulnerability to create a seductive and dangerous universe that is at once organic and synthesised, tender and brutal’, and all of this in evidence here, on a song inspired by the events which spawned the #MeToo movement.

Against a dense, droney synth, pitched against a thumping mid-tempo disco beat, Hezen adopts a first-speaking persona to present an imagined court clash between Lisbeth Salander, protagonist in ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’.

“Did you think I’d let you get away with it?” she asks. Direct, empowered, and also ultimately listenable and even danceable, ‘Bring Your Alibi’ brings everything together in three-and-a-quarter minutes, making it everything a single should be.
