Review: 'BEDFORD, BEN'
'The Hermit's Spyglass'

-  Label: 'Cavalier Recordings'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '29th March 2019'-  Catalogue No: 'CR 255621'

Our Rating:
Ben Bedford's fifth studio album since 2007 comprises eleven short songs, including five instrumentals, and charts "a magical prairie journey" in the company of the impressively bearded singer and his cute cat, Darwin.

This is a world as seen from the modest perspective of a little old farmhouse ("The Hermitage") in Illinois. It begins with Morning Rise and concludes with Quiet On The Green Hill.

In between there is time for Morning Coffee and some gentle reflections on nature including an expressed desire to fly like a Little Falcon to be a high above "the unkindness here below".

The crisp, elegant finger-picking and mellow musings on the daily planet mean that the half hour playing time passes smoothly and harmoniously.

The peaceful vibe is summed up in Morning Conversations, where the cat is content to talk to birds rather than chase or eat them. It's a pity humans aren't more inclined to modify their killer instincts.
