Review: 'WAND'
'Laughing Matter'

-  Label: 'Drag City'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '19th April 2019'

Our Rating:
I really enjoyed Wand's "Plum" album from a couple of years back and essentially this is more of the same. Collected improvisations perhaps, but honed into the shape of an album.

It's full of great songs such as "Rio Grande" (summer radio) , "Wonder ll" (lullaby), "Walkie Talkie" (catchy single), "xoxo" (classic Wand) and then there is plenty more on the album to sink your teeth into.

Some of the longer tracks work really well like opener "Scarecrow" and "Airplane" which could almost be a chill out track from a Chemical Brothers album. Others like "Evening Star" and "Lucky's Sight" find my attention waning.

And that for me, would be the ever so slight criticism of this album. It feels overlong and perhaps some of the material might have been jettisoned to bring the rest more into focus. There is still plenty of magic Wand to be had here and if you enjoyed "Plum" you will like this but perhaps not as much.
