Review: 'DRAKE, ELENI'
'Songs On Sundays (EP)'

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '24th May 2019'

Our Rating:
The sun don’t shine for everyone and certainly not always for Eleni Drake.

The London-based artist’s second EP contains seven songs of a fairly morbid and / or fatalistic persuasion including one entitled The Sun Don’t.

In the Untitled first track she reasons that it is preferable to ”feel something instead of nothing” which is hard to argue with but also indicates she’s a glass half empty type.

Drake is influenced by blues/jazz/soul icons like Nina Simone and Ella Fitzgerald and also cites modern talent Jorja Smith as an inspiration. I’d guess Beth Gibbons has also crossed her musical radar more than once judging from a track like Trippy Tea.

The bleak tone is unmistakable but there’s a quiet beauty in the sadness and the emotional power never feels contrived or manipulative.
