Review: 'Derange'
'Higher'

-  Genre: 'Rock'

Our Rating:
So, the hyp: “Derange, London’s self-styled purveyors of ‘Sassrock’, the band blend tech-influenced alternative-metal with a strong sense of cinema and video game influenced imagery. A sonic mix of angst and diversity, described as ‘a perfect blend of metal madness and subtle beauty’, Derange are a passionate and incredibly focussed quintet.”

“‘Higher’ is taken from their upcoming ‘Senses Ep (Part One)’, an ambitious and powerful release, that charts the huge leap forward in the band’s development since the release of their acclaimed 2015 debut ‘The Awakening’.”

2015 was 4 years ago. Never mind the ambition of the release, what have they been playing at? Redefining a genre? Crafting the most insanely complex and challenging compositions imaginable? Playing more video games? Or just tuning their guitars with extra strings and faffing with new layers of pretentiousness while kicking out more accessible nu-metal / alt rock crossover with a strongly melodic bent?

On the strength of this offering, only the latter two. The song’s about as inspired as the video. It’s got an ok hook, but really, ok is as good as it gets.
