Coming after the incessant, and extremely good, Killing Joke-style heaviosity of previous single "Romantic Exorcism", "The Long Face" is initially something of a surprise.
Reason? Well, your reviewer hadn't expected squeaky clean guitars and some very Roxy Music-style textural sax bits, though to be fair the tension's inbuilt from the beginning and "The Long Face" is a real nagger. Besides, come the chorus and the extended instrumental section post-song the squall of heavy guitars has returned to blow the gaffe wide open again.
This writer's still not heard Minus over the long distance of an album, so can't really comment on what they can achieve in the long run. If this and "Romantic Exorcism" are anything to go by, though, at the very least their next set of UK dates will see fireworks going off.
