Review: 'PIONEERS'
'FALLING/ SOMETHING NEW (Ltd. 7" only)'

-  Label: 'NORTHERN AMBITION (www.northernambition.com'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '12th July 2004'

Our Rating:
PIONEERS are the latest act to come from the tasteful nurturing ground of Manchester's Northern Ambition imprint, and it's no great surprise on hearing these two songs that there is quite a buzz surrounding their live shows.

Both tunes are obvious, radio-friendly choices. "Falling" proffers well-crafted hooks, perfect harmonies and the requisite textured, resonant guitars you'd usually find coming courtesy of Doves. It's not terribly original, but the performance is hungrily impressive and it wins you over comfortably enough.

"Something New", meanwhile, was apparently picked up for the soundtrack of a major fashion showcase film, and it's not hard to see why as its' slowburning, epically-inclined ballad execution sounds spookily close to Coldplay's "Parachutes" album, even down to Phil Zeidler's soaraway vocals. It's swooping, aspirational guitar rock and yearns for a broader canvas.

Pioneers are hardly standing at a brave new frontier with these tunes, and indeed this kind of sound leads to an exceptionally well-trodden path. However, they're good at what they do and I can see success at the end of the tunnel. You'll need to get your skates on for this, anyway, as it's a strictly limited edition, 300-only pressing.
