Review: 'STRIPMALL BALLADS'
'Distant'

-  Label: 'Freeloader Free Press'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '5th June 2020'

Our Rating:
Based in Maryland, Phillips Saylor Wisor was a founding member of an old-time duo, Shiftless Rounders, with Benny Sidelinge. He is a touring member of a bluegrass band, King Wilkie, and also finds time to teach clawhammer banjo.

Wisor tired of performing traditional string band music so he started recording his songs under the name Stripmall Ballads, a nod to Woody Guthrie’s Dust Bowl Ballads.

The eight lo-fi songs on his latest album document the modern troubadour's life on the back roads of Middle America.

Frequently heartbroken and/or emotionally adrift, his fraught and forlorn songs echo the sentiments of Jason Molina and Will Oldham at their most lonesome.

As dark and dusty as the dives you imagine this music being played in.
